Recommended books:

The Original Handbook of Dr. Mikao Usui by Dr. Mikao Usui and Frank Arjava Petter
A wonderful resource for the practitioner. The primary focus of this book is to provide the hand positions and techniques of Reiki outlined in Dr. Usui's original handbook for his students. The author also contributes some wonderful information on meditation and breathing techniques, Reiki's connection to Buddhism and his own insightful healing techniques. I have found this a wonderful compliment to my "western based" training techniques.

Reiki Fire : New Information About the Origin of the Reiki Power a Complete Method by Frank Arjava Petter
This is, in my opinion, one of the more interesting and refreshing books to come out about Reiki in recent years. The author teaches Reiki in Japan, and has done extensive research into Mikao Usui's life and the history of Reiki. In addition, this book provides the basics on the application of Reiki - overall, it lives up to it's name, being a "complete" manual.

Inner Bridges: A Guide to Energy Movement and Body Structure by Fritz Frederick Smith, M.D.
Although this is not a book on Reiki, I highly recommend this as supplemental material for any practitioner seeking to better understand energy movement and its relation to health. Dr. Smith provides unique connections between Eastern and Western beliefs about health and the human body. The material in this book on energy structure and techniques serves as a wonderful support for anyone practicing Reiki or any other health modality.

Infinite Grace: Where the Worlds of Science and Spiritual Healing Meet by Diane Goldner.
Like "Inner Bridges", this not a book specifically on Reiki. However, I highly recommend this as supplemental material for practitioners of any healing modality. Diane Goldner explores the world of energy healing with a scientific yet loving approach. For the logically minded, this book provides clear reasoning in laymen's terms, explaining that the scientific and spiritual realms are addressing the same issues from different perspectives. She combines case studies with personal stories of well-known healers, providing a factual and inspiring account of where energy healing is - and where we may be going.

Inner Reiki: A Practical Guide for Healing and Meditation by Tanmaya Honervogt.
This guide provides wonderful tools for the Reiki practitioner. The author supplies a variety of meditation and visualization techniques to use in conjunction with Reiki. Wonderfully illustrated and a valuable resource for self-work.

One Degree Beyond: A Reiki Journey Into Energy Medicine by Jane Anne Narrin.
This book provides a journaling approach to promoting and exploring spiritual growth. Although technically it might be used by anyone, it is framed around the principles and use of the Usui style of Reiki, and is as such probably the most valuable to Reiki practitioners. Providing such tools as quizzes to define your personal body map, exercises for relaxation and a 21-day meditation, it may be used in whole or part to better explore the day-to-day application of Reiki in one's life.

Reiki for the Soul: 10 Doorways to Inner Peace by Mari Hall
Ms. Hall's book provides a different resource for both Reiki practitioners and those who have not yet experienced Reiki. This book provides a tool to assist anyone in his or her personal spiritual, emotional and mental journeys. She lovingly offers some of her insights along with the story of her personal journey as a Reiki practitioner and Master-Teacher. This is not a Reiki manual, but may be a great choice if you are looking for a workbook aligned with Reiki energy and perspective to assist with your personal growth.

Reiki : A Torch in Daylight by Karyn Mitchell
This is Karyn Mitchell's first book on Reiki, and although a bit lacking in format (the fonts change throughout he book, and the format sometimes seems a bit choppy), it is an excellent resource for practitioners, both starting out and more established.

Reiki : Beyond the Usui System by Karyn Mitchell
Ms. Mitchell's second book clearly demonstrates her growth as a Reiki Master-Teacher and healer. This book is a great resource for those practicing Reiki - providing useful meditations, techniques and suggestions for incorporating Reiki into our daily lives.

Recommended Music for Reiki Sessions:

There are numerous recordings on the market for Reiki sessions. Everything from running water, to drums, to pan flutes, to almost all "new age" music has been re-marketed with a label of "Reiki". Some CDs are obviously better than others, and in the end, it is up to the practioner and person receiving Reiki to determine what is best for them. I have a small but growing collection of CDs, and try to diversify the styles to meet anyone's needs. Below are a couple of recordings I've found that are off the beaten path, which I recommend:

Golden Bowls of Compassion, One hour of Tibetan Bowls, recorded by Karma Moffett in 2000.
This is quite simply an incredible recording. As the subtilted description implies, this is an hour-long recording of Tibetan Bowls. Traditionally, Tibetan bowls are made of "black metal", a mix of 5-9 alloys. When more than one bowl is sounded, the mixed result is a harmonic that pierces the body on a cellular and etheral level, inspiring deep relaxation. And that is what this recording does. It is subtle enough for a quiet session, and wonderous enough to be worth listening to over and over again. (It also makes a great meditation CD.)

The artist, Karma Moffett, has hand-picked each of the bowls, bells and horns in his collection over a period of 18 years, and it shows. He has been producing CDs (to my knowledge) since 1995. At this point, the only one I own is "Golden Bowls of Compassion" (his latest recording), but I plan to own more. I was honored enough to meet him during a recent trip to San Francisco and attend his "Tibetan Bell Experience", provided most Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings. If you are in the area, I highly recommend attending. For more information on his CDs or his Tibetan Bell Experience, contact Karma at padmatapes@aol.com or call (415) 621-8135.

Tibetan Chakra Meditations recorded by Ben Scott and Christa Michell, 2000.
Similar to Karma Moffet's CD, this recording's foundation is the tibetan bowls. However, this is a lovely variation: the CD includes fifteen pieces; seven pieces (one for each chakra moving upward) with haunting melodies on flute and other instrument, a piece to "cleanse" the chakras through ringing the bowls, then another seven times through the chakras with only the bowls and no accompanying melodies. I have received wonderful feedback from my clients and students on this CD.

Hearts, Hands and Hides produced by Talking Taco Music, Inc. in the US, 1997.
For those clients that prefer a variety of songs with a slightly shamanistic or Native American feel, this CD is lovely. A collection of 10 songs, totalling about 50-60 minutes of music, has the common theme of hypnotic and meditation-inspiring drumming.

Electrifying Thunderstorms produced by the Special Music Company, 1997.
A lovely recording of heavy rains and rolling thunder. I personally find this very relaxing, but you occasionally those receiving sessions have found the pauses between the thunder not conducive to total relaxation.

Merlin's Magic: Reiki produced by Inner Worlds Music, 1995.
Very popular among Reiki practitioners, this 60-minute recording was specifically composed and arranged by Andreas Mock of Merlin's Magic to be played during Reiki treatments. This combination of acoustic guitar, piano, keyboards, violin, viola and Tibetan bells provides what I would call a "new age" feel, without being obtrusive during a session.

Note: If you are looking for a Master-Teacher in the New England area, I highly recommend my Master-Teacher, Pat Roberson. (Click on her name for information about her and her class schedule.)

Reikiflow
A wonderful and robust site on Reiki with strong Buddhist influences. Written by a Reiki Master in the Seattle area, this site explores many of the advanced concepts of Reiki with an open heart and clear understanding.

Reiki Workshop Yahoo! Group
This is a new Yahoo! Group which has the potential to be a great resouce. The purpose of this list is to provide a central place to list local, regional, national and international workshops, training events, and conferences of interest to both beginning and advanced Reiki and other energy work practitioners and masters. It is also a place to discuss events and teachings that have been of personal value to you.

Reiki Joy
This business is founded and run by a Reiki practitioner. She crafts lovely pieces of jewelry using the Reiki Kanji (but not the Reiki symbols) and other inspired images. A lovely concept and perhaps great idea for gifts that teachers may provide their advanced students.
