The Kanji or symbol for Reiki

Click on the links below or scroll down to read through the frequently asked questions about Reiki. Some of the questions have more detailed information, indicated by a "More" link on the right hand side after the answer to the question.

Please keep in mind that Reiki and all forms of holistic medicine are wonderful tools to speed healing, help balance your body's system, and maintain a healthy life. They are not, however, a cure-all or a substitute for regular preventative health care. One of the wonderful things about Reiki is that it does not interfere with other healing modalities. It assists the body in healing itself, no matter if you are interested in simply maintaining a healthy body or in healing a more serious problem. No practitioner of Reiki should tell you that (s)he can "cure" you of your physical ailments, merely that (s)he can help you to heal yourself. Continue seeing your regular physicians, including physicals and preventative testing. The best approach to health care, in my opinion, is a balanced blend of Eastern and Western techniques.

What is Reiki?

Reiki (pronounced ray-kee) is a holistic method of healing, much like the laying on of hands. The practitioner or Master simply lays her hands along your body and allows the universal energy (Ki) to flow through her to promote your natural healing process. A good analogy is that Reiki works like acupuncture, but without the needles. Reiki works on all of the bodies - spiritual, mental/emotional and physical - providing an all-encompassing healing experience.

Who is behind Reiki Intuitive?

Reiki Intuitive is run by Elaine Eriksen Rose. Elaine is a Master-Teacher of Usui Shiki Ryoho and Komyo Reiki Kai, practicing out of Colorado in the U.S. All information on this site is provided by her. For general information about Reiki Intuitive, see our about page. For a personal bio on Elaine's history with Reiki, see the biography page.

  Back to Questions

What school or system of Reiki do you practice?

Usui Shiki Ryoho, or the Traditional Usui System of Reiki (taught primarily in the US) and Komyo Reiki Kai (taught in Japan). For more information on the different systems of reiki see a brief history of Reiki.

How does Reiki differ from other "energy work"?

Although there are other differences, there are two major differences between Reiki and other "energy work":
  • The practitioner is not giving her energy to heal; Instead, she simply acts as a conduit for the Universal Energy (Ki). One of the greatest benefits of this difference is that the practitioner's personal energy and issues do not interfere with the healing process.

  • Reiki can be performed on the self. I do not know of another healing modality that allows for fully effective self-application.

Is Reiki a religion?

No, Reiki is not a religion, nor is it affiliated with any particular belief system.

How does Reiki work?

Reiki is all about balance. It works on the mental, emotional and spiritual bodies as well as the physical. In Western medicine we often treat the symptom rather than the cause of the dis-ease in our bodies. Reiki is very Eastern in its approach to healing; Most of our physical ills - especially those that reoccur over time - have a root cause in an emotional, mental or spiritual block in our body. By helping the body's energy to realign itself properly, Reiki releases these "knots", freeing us of the physical effects caused by them. This can be very subtle, and is often not as "immediate" as taking a pill. However, the effects are often more long-lasting.

  Back to Questions

Does Reiki work for everyone?

Reiki can and does work for everyone. However, it should be noted that Reiki is not an "instant fix" and does not force healing upon the person receiving it. If someone has a long-term illness due to an emotional issue (s)he is not willing to release, no amount of Reiki - or any other healing method, in my opinion - will work. Some issues may take longer to be healed, depending upon the extent of the issue and how willing you are to release what is causing it. Reiki does not require your belief, but if you do not truly wish to be healed, it will abide by your intent for yourself.

  Back to Questions

What should I expect when receiving Reiki?

The Reiki practitioner or Master will ask you to remove your shoes and get comfortable. She will then place her hands along your body in a specific pattern to maximize the benefit of the Reiki energy.

People have varied experiences when receiving Reiki. Right away you may notice that the practitioner's hands grow hot: This is the flow of Reiki energy. You may experience an overall feeling of well being and relaxation, or you may feel nothing at all. Reiki is a subtle art, and the effects may not manifest themselves immediately or with simply one session. Because the flow of energy is directly related to the overall balance of the person receiving Reiki, some people may find themselves having a strong emotional reaction. It is not uncommon to burst out laughing or crying, or to experience physical sensations or vivid memories during a session.

What is an attunement vs. a session?

An "attunement" is the process by which a person becomes able to give Reiki. Once you have been "attuned", you are a Reiki practitioner. When receiving Reiki for healing purposes, it is generally referred to as a "session".

  Back to Questions

What is remote or absentee healing?

Remote healing - sometimes also called distant or absentee healing - is the ability to heal someone without touching them, whether across the room or across the world. The ability to heal remotely is part of Reiki II instruction.

Who can learn Reiki?

Anyone can learn Reiki. Reiki does not care about your beliefs or current knowledge and works well in conjunction with other healing modalities. I will offer, however, that it builds upon current abilities and knowledge, so not all Reiki practitioners are of the same ability even though they may be attuned to the same level or degree.

  Back to Questions

How can I become a Reiki Pracitioner?

One becomes a Reiki Practitioner through a class taught by a Master-Teacher. During this class, the Master-Teacher gives the student an attunement, the process by which the new practitioner is aligned with the Reiki energy. At this point, the student is able to give Reiki to him/herself, as well as to others. Click on the link below for more information on the course content for each of the levels and my current class offerings.

What are the "levels" or "degrees" of Reiki?

There are four "levels" or "degrees" of Reiki; Reiki I, Reiki II, Master and Master-Teacher. Each Reiki class is cumulative, involving more detailed information on Reiki, the symbols of Reiki, and application. Each attunement to the Reiki energy is likewise cumulative, building the practitioner's ability to heal. Click on the link below for more information on each of the levels.

What are the chakras and what do they have to do with Reiki?

The chakras are energy centers of the body used in many eastern healing modalities. There are seven main chakras along the spine that correspond with all organs and systems as well as the emotional and spiritual bodies. The hand placements used in a Reiki session cover all of the chakras to provide balance throughout the body.

  Back to Questions

What are the Reiki symbols?

There are four symbols used in Usui Shiki Ryoho Reiki, and four symbols used in Komyo Reik Kai. Practitioners learn three of the symbols (for both systems) when attuned to Reiki II, and the last at the Master Level. The symbols are used to magnify and focus the healing energy during a session. They are also used to activate the Reiki energy in the palms of the student during an attunement. The symbols vary slightly per system of Reiki, but serve the same general purpose. You will not find the symbols published anywhere as they are sacred to Reiki practitioners.

How do I find a Reiki Master?

As Reiki is taught Master to student, it is a very individualized art. When seeking out a Reiki Master - whether for the experience of Reiki or to become a practitioner - use your best judgment and intuition. You will find a variety of fees and lengths of time for Reiki classes as well as a myriad of techniques and fees for the treatments themselves. If possible, experience a healing from the Master or a student of the Master you are considering to evaluate how well they can transfer the skill. Listen to your intuition, and train only with a Reiki Master you feel in harmony with.

For local references on finding a Master-Teacher, often word of mouth is your best bet. If you do not know of anyone who has had an experience with Reiki, you may want to check your local holistic centers or "new age" shops. For on-line references on how to find a Reiki Master-Teacher in your area, please see our section on on-line Reiki directory links. For commentary from Elaine's students, follow the link below.

The ethics of Reiki.

Because Reiki is an individualized art, there is no governing body to declare what is appropriate and what is not. I believe any Reiki Master-Teacher should include in his/her classes a section on the ethical questions of Reiki. With the ability to heal comes both power and responsibility, and when seeking Reiki as a method of healing, you should include this in your evaluation of the Practitioner you select. I offer the link below to the ethics I teach in my classes.

What are the Five Principles of Reiki?

There are five principles that are the center tenants of Reiki. They exemplify the mindset of Reiki:
Just for today, I will not worry.
Just for today, I will not anger.
Just for today, I will honor my parents, teachers and elders.
Just for today, I will earn my living honestly.
Just for today, I will show gratitude to every living thing.
This is the most common translation of the original Japanese. These concepts are discussed in depth during Reiki Classes. For other translations and an advanced discussion of each, follow the link below.

What does Reiki Cost?

Generally speaking, the fee for a Reiki session is comparable to that of a massage in your area. Classes can range from a hundred dollars to thousands. It depends upon the school and the teacher offering the class. If seeking a class, I highly recommend you meet with the Master-Teacher before the class and use your best judgement to determine if (s)he is the correct teacher for you. For my current fees, please see the link below.

Why charge for Reiki?

People do not value what they do not pay for. Although most of the time it is, payment is not necessarily monetary. If someone is unable to pay, most Reiki Practitioners offer scaled fees or will barter for the healing. Although I will not turn anyone seeking healing away, I firmly believe that the recipient needs to offer something in return or it will have no value. And usually when Reiki is given no value, it is far less effective.

On a personal note, I think we as a society need to stop placing lesser values on those things that are "good"; getting paid to do good work does not make that work somehow tainted. If we pay phenomenal amounts of money for professions we consider "unethical" and expect our teachers, spiritual leaders and healers to be poor, what are we saying about who we want to be as a society?
